Manila Electric Railroad And Light Company also known as Meralco; was the company’s original name until 1919, the Philippines' largest distributor of electrical power. It was Metro Manila's only electric power distributor and holds the power distribution franchised for 22 cities and 89 municipalities, including the whole of the National Capital Region and the exurbs that form Mega Manila. It was founded on January 17, 1895 and located at Pasig, Philippines.
Meralco serves Metro Manila, where it is the sole electricity distributor, as well as some nearby provinces, like Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Quezon and Batangas. Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal were solely served by Meralco. Some parts in Batangas, Laguna and Quezon where served by Meralco, where most or some areas were served by electric cooperatives while most part in Laguna and Quezon were served also by the company, but other areas, mostly rural municipalities, were served by electric cooperatives. And only Santo Tomas, the First Philippine Industrial Park in Tanauan, Batangas City, and San Pascual in Batangas were served by Meralco, and the rest of the provinces were franchised areas of electric cooperatives.
Electricity was a very important thing for us humans; we used it to turn on the lights, electric fun, television, washing machine, refrigerator and many more appliances that make our life live easier. We also used electricity to charge our cellphones and laptop that we used every day. It’s hard to live without electricity that’s why even the rate was expensive it was just okay; the important thing was there’s electricity in the house.
There’s good news for the consumers of electricity. The Meralco was going to give a refund to the consumers within three months. It was estimated of 6.9 Billion pesos that where going to give back to the consumers. The money was come from the extra charges paid by the consumers in the past three years. This will be done by discounted charge of 0.75/kWh from June to August. It means that if you were consuming 200/kWh in a month your monthly bill will be reduced by 150 pesos. And if you were consuming 300/kWh in a month your monthly bill will be reduced by 225 pesos. This kind of refund will become a big help to those consumer who used large amount of electricity.
Do you still remember that on August 22, 2008 the department of justice filed a syndicate charges against the Meralco. The complaint accused Meralco of "illegally declaring as income ₱889 million in consumers’ money, which represents interest from meter and bill deposits consumers had been paying since 1995”. But on October 6, 2008, the Pasig City Regional Trial Court Branch 71 dismissed the syndicated estafa case filed against the Meralco board of directors, for the prosecution failed to establish all the elements of syndicated estafa.
It just means that Meralco earned a lot of money from the consumers so it’s just okay if the Meralco gave back to the consumers what they deserved. They should return the excess money to the consumers soon because it will be a big help to each family to lessen their bills.
